Every jewellery photography guide gives you the same instruction: use soft, diffused light and minimise shadows. Follow it on a ring and you create two problems at once. A polished band is a curved mirror, so it hands the whole room back to the lens: the tripod, the window and you standing behind it. Blanket soft light is also the exact thing that flattens a diamond’s fire into grey.
A ring reflects your base surface, your background and you. That is the real subject here, and almost nobody writes about it.
Knowing how to photograph rings for a business is mostly about controlling what the metal reflects and building depth of field without stopping down. This guide is written for jewellers, jewellery brands and e-commerce or resale sellers shooting their own range in-house, not for someone photographing the ring on their own finger. It covers the whole workflow: shot list, rig, reflection control, sparkle, metal colour, hallmarks, consistency across a collection and marketplace-ready files. It is how we shoot jewellery as a Central London commercial studio.

Step 1: Build the Shot List Every Ring Needs
A ring listing needs seven frames, not one. Decide them before you touch a camera, because the list dictates the rig.

Each one exists for a commercial reason. A buyer who cannot judge band width or setting height either does not buy or buys and returns, and when a customer receives a piece that looks different from the online image, trust breaks and the return is expensive.
You do not need all 40 rings on day one. Rank the range first: bestsellers, then highest-margin pieces, then anything visually distinctive enough to earn social use.
Resale and secondhand listings need two extra frames on top of the seven, one for honest condition and one for any certificate or paperwork. Step 9 covers both.
Pin the seven-shot list to the wall and shoot to it every time. The list decides the rig, not the other way round.
Step 2: Set Up the Camera, Lens and Surface for Something the Size of a Fingernail
The two pieces of kit that improve ring photos most are a tripod with a rising centre column and a sheet of white card. Neither is a camera upgrade.
Lens. A dedicated macro in the 85 to 100mm range on full frame gives enough working distance to keep the camera and the lights out of the piece. Macro specialist Micael Widell shoots a Laowa 85mm that tops out at f/5.6 and calls that no limitation at all, because it is very uncommon to want anything wider than f/5.6 on a macro subject. Hold that thought for Step 6.
Tripod. Non-negotiable at macro magnification, and specifically one with a centre column. Raising the camera by a couple of centimetres is the standard fix for the lens appearing as a dark blob in the metal, and you cannot do it smoothly by hand.

Surface and background. Choose it for what it reflects, not for how it looks on the table. White or light grey acrylic and matte white card keep a band clean. Dark slate and textured wood photograph beautifully in a lifestyle frame, then load the band with dark reflections you spend the next hour filling back in. Etsy has no white background rule, while Amazon and Google Shopping do, and the exact numbers land in Step 10.
On phones, be honest about the ceiling. The iPhone 16 Pro’s native macro mode auto-switches lenses and applies computational processing that works against fine jewellery detail. Back the phone off to roughly 15 to 20cm, use 2x optical zoom instead, and shoot ProRAW rather than HEIC.
Your surface choice was really a reflection decision, which is the whole of the next step.
Step 3: Control What the Ring Reflects
You cannot remove a reflection from a polished band. A curved mirror reflects something, always. The job is not eliminating reflections, it is choosing them, and once you accept that, every other lighting problem on a ring becomes solvable.
Here is the method we use, in order.
1. Build the cone. Surround the ring so that every surface the band can see is white or translucent. A conical tent beats a square light box on a ring, because the curve of the band looks upward and outward at the same time and a cone gives it white in both directions. Poster board rolled into a cone and taped does the job as well as anything you can buy.
2. Cut a lens hole. The camera looks through a small gap in the cone rather than sitting inside it. Done properly, the band sees a ring of white material with a tiny dark pupil in the middle, instead of a black rectangle where the camera is.
3. Read the black. This is the step nobody writes down and the most useful thing in this article. Put your eye at the camera’s exact position, look at the ring, and find the places where the band reflects black or a muddy dark tone. Then place a white fill card at that specific point in the room. Not uniformly around the set, at that point. You are replacing reflections, not deleting them.
4. Carve the edges back. A perfect white cone produces flawless metal with no shape at all, because the band has nothing dark to define its edge against. Place thin black cards just outside the frame to create dark defining borders on the outer and inner curves. Then shape the highlight deliberately: position a diffuser strip or a large white sheet so its shape reflects as a graduated rectangular shine rather than a hard spot. That gradient is what reads as polished metal rather than grey plastic.
5. Kill the camera reflection. If the lens still shows as a dark spot on the shoulder of the band, do not add more diffusion. Raise the camera slowly on the centre column from Step 2, or rotate the ring a few degrees, until that specific reflection rotates off the visible surface. It is a geometry problem, not a lighting one.

6. Add cross-polarisation, if the stone allows. A CPL filter on the lens plus polarising film over the light source, rotated against each other, removes glare beyond what any tent achieves. The limits are real. It works on transparent stones such as diamonds and is explicitly not beneficial on opaque stones such as opal, and small changes in light position or filter rotation can just as easily make an image worse. Treat it as an iterative check, never a fixed setting. Opaque materials behave differently enough under the same treatment that we handle them separately, which is why pearls get their own approach.
Work through those six in sequence and the metal will be clean, shaped and free of the room. It will also, if there is a stone in the setting, look completely dead.
That is the trade-off built into a perfect white cone, and the next step is where you fix it.
Step 4: Light the Metal Soft and the Stones Hard
Metal wants a big soft source. Stones want a small hard one. You need both in the same frame, which is why “keep it soft” produces so many technically clean photos of lifeless diamonds.
The physics is straightforward. A broad soft source wraps a curved band and gives it the graduated shine you built in Step 3. That same source floods a stone evenly from every angle, and even illumination is the opposite of sparkle. Direct or spot lighting visibly enhances scintillation with sharp defined flashes, while diffused light mutes it.
So layer them. Keep the soft base from the cone, then add one small unmodified hard source aimed at the stone: an LED spotlight, a pocket torch, a fibre-optic light tube, or a small mirror bouncing your existing key light back at the table facet. Split the lights by function once you have the room for it, one for the metalwork, one for the face of the stone, one for anything set into the band.
One warning nobody else gives you: do not use a ring light on a polished band. A circular source stamps a circular catchlight into curved metal, and the doughnut is visible in every frame. Plenty of gear guides recommend them for jewellery anyway. A broad rectangular soft source plus a small hard accent avoids the shape entirely.
The sunlight contradiction resolves the same way. Guides say both “sunlight enhances sparkle” and “avoid direct sunlight”, sometimes on the same page. Both are right. Direct sun is a small hard source, so it genuinely produces fire, and it is also uncontrollable and shifts through the day, which is fatal for a catalogue where every SKU has to match.
The same light that shapes the metal is also deciding what colour that metal reads as, which is the next problem.
Step 5: Get Gold, Platinum and Silver Reading True
Silver photographs icy blue, gold drifts towards green or muddy yellow, and a frame that reads too warm turns white gold into yellow gold on screen. That last one is not an aesthetic problem. It is a customer buying the wrong metal.
The fix comes first. Shoot an 18% grey card in the same light at the start of every setup, set a custom white balance from it, then sync that white balance across the whole batch in Lightroom or ACR. The reference is only valid for the lighting it was shot under, so reshoot the card whenever the light moves.
Metal by metal:
- Yellow gold needs a neutral to slightly cool reference or it goes orange. It also picks up green from surrounding surfaces and coloured walls, which is the real cause of green gold rather than the white balance alone. - White gold and platinum photograph almost identically, so they need consistent white balance across the range or two versions of the same design will read as different metals in a collection grid.
- Silver needs watching for the blue cast, particularly under cool LED panels.
Shoot RAW so the decision stays reversible. Treat 5500K as a sensible starting point for diamonds and silver rather than an answer, and let the grey card settle it.
The rule: shoot the grey card first, every time the light changes.
Step 6: Shoot at f/5.6 to f/8 and Build Depth With Focus Stacking
Published advice runs f/1.4 to f/4, f/8 to f/11 and f/11 to f/16, and one widely read guide gives f/1.4 to f/4 in its body and f/8 to f/16 in its own FAQ. They are all answering the wrong question. Depth on a ring comes from stacking, not from stopping down.
Full-frame sensors have a diffraction-limited aperture of roughly f/6.6 to f/6.7. Past that you gain depth of field and lose exactly the micro-detail that sells jewellery: prong edges, hallmark stamps, facet crispness.

A ring’s band depth plus setting height routinely exceeds the 2 to 3mm of usable depth you get at 1:1 magnification, even at f/8. That gap is the entire reason focus stacking exists.
The stacking workflow: rack focus front to back in small increments, shoot RAW and ideally tethered so exposure and focus are checked before you move on, and expect under 10 frames for a shallow band, 20 to 50 or more for a deep setting or tall halo.
Software matters at volume. In one documented comparison, Photoshop’s Auto-Blend took over 30 minutes on a large stack using 16GB or more of RAM. Helicon Focus finished the same blend in under 5 minutes on roughly 8GB.
Photoshop is fine for the occasional piece; Helicon earns its licence across a catalogue. Both need manual cleanup on the finest facet edges.
None of this works handheld, which is why the tripod in Step 2 was not optional. Sharpness is solved; the stone still needs to come alive.
Step 7: Photograph an Engagement Ring So the Diamond Shows Fire
One small hard light aimed at the stone face, added to an otherwise soft set, is the single change that brings a dead diamond back. Everything else in this step is refinement.
Get the vocabulary right first, because it is what your customers are actually asking about. Fire is dispersion, white light split into rainbow flashes across the facets. Brilliance is the white light returned off the internal and external facets. Scintillation is the flashing pattern that appears as the stone, the light or the viewer moves.

The applied setup borrows from earlier steps rather than replacing them. Soft cone for the metal from Step 3, then one small unmodified hard source or a mirror aimed at the table facet. Add a second small source for stones set into the band.
Then tilt the stone. A solitaire sitting dead flat to the lens returns a uniform grey, because the same facets are facing the camera across the whole table. A few degrees of tilt changes which facets return light, and it is often the entire fix. Move the stone before you move the lights.
Halos and pave settings are the deepest stacks in a ring catalogue, so this is where the 20 to 50 frame end of Step 6 applies. Budget the time before shoot day, not during.
Cross-polarisation is more useful here than anywhere else, because it works well on transparent stones. It will also strip the specular flashes if you over-rotate it, so check the result at every quarter turn rather than setting it and shooting the set.
The demand for this is not theoretical. The most common complaint in engagement ring communities is that a ring looks far prettier in person than in any photograph of it. The rule for solitaires: soft for the setting, one hard hit for the stone, and tilt before you touch anything else.
Step 8: Stand a Ring Upright Without Leaving a Trace
Every jewellery site has that upright hero shot, and nothing visible in the frame is holding the ring up. Three methods do it, and each carries a different cost.
1. Putty or wax. A pea-sized piece of clear museum putty or dental wax under the shank holds a ring instantly. Angle the camera so the putty hides behind the band and plan to retouch whatever remains. The trade-off is real: dental wax is softer and smears or leaves residue on the surface, museum putty is stiffer and less pliable. Neither is invisible.
2. Shoot flat and rotate. Lay the ring flat, light it so it casts no shadow, shoot it, then rotate the image in post to simulate the standing angle. No props, no cleanup. The angle is simulated rather than a true photograph of the ring standing, which matters if you are selling pre-owned pieces where the image is evidence (Step 9).
3. Invisible wire. Suspend the ring on near-invisible fishing line for a floating hero and retouch the line out. Slowest of the three, and best reserved for a single campaign image rather than 40 SKUs.

Turntable lightboxes with an inside-rotating platform, such as the GemLightbox Mini, are built around flat pieces like rings and are worth knowing about for volume. They suit single-piece workflow rather than colour-managed catalogue production, so treat one as a shortcut for social frames rather than a replacement for the setup above.
Whichever you pick, you have just decided how much retouching each frame costs. Step 11 is where that bill arrives.
Step 9: Shoot the Hallmark, the Engraving and the Scale
A UK hallmark is a legally required mark on precious metal and one of the strongest trust signals a listing can carry. Almost no photography guide tells you how to shoot one.
Raking light at roughly 30 degrees to the surface is the technique. A low angle casts shadow into the stamped recesses and makes the mark legible; direct overhead light flattens it out completely and gives you a photograph of a shiny curve.
The curve itself is the second problem. A hallmark stamped inside a band sits on a tight radius that extreme macro cannot hold in one frame. The field-tested answer is counterintuitive: back off from full magnification and stop down to around f/8 with strong light, rather than pushing magnification further. That is a deliberate exception to Step 6, and it works because a legible stamp needs depth more than it needs resolution.
Engravings and certificate numbers get identical treatment. GIA or IGI paperwork photographed alongside the piece is standard practice on high-value and resale listings.
Scale is solved three ways, and the strongest listings use all three:
- An on-hand frame, which is the most intuitive reference a buyer has.
- Stated band width and stone dimensions written into the caption.
- A neutral reference object in one supporting frame.
Hand shots need preparation: clean nails, moisturised skin, and a ring sizer or clear insert to hold a piece steady on a larger finger.
Pre-owned listings need two more frames. Photograph wear, prong condition and any damage straight, with no flattering angle, because the alternative is a return and a broken trust signal that costs more than the sale.

Step 10: Keep 40 Rings Consistent and Export to Marketplace Spec
Forty rings that each look fine alone can still look like a jumble sale in a collection grid. Consistency is a documentation problem before it is a lighting problem.
Write the setup down. Light-to-piece distance, camera height, lens distance, table height, backdrop position, props. Then reuse those exact numbers for every product in that category. A locked, repeatable setup is what lets a studio run 30 to 40 SKUs in a single day with identical framing, lighting and tone, and it is essentially impossible to replicate at home across separate sessions where everything gets packed away in between.
Two habits protect the batch. Shoot tethered, so focus, exposure and styling problems surface at full resolution as each frame lands instead of a week later in the edit. And shoot one grey card per session (Step 5) so the whole set syncs to a single white balance.
Then export to spec. These are the 2026 numbers:

Etsy’s 2000px threshold matters more for rings than for almost any other product, because hover-to-zoom is how a buyer inspects facets and band texture before committing.
Google Shopping is the channel where a coloured or lifestyle background gets a jewellery image disapproved outright, so keep a white background version of every hero even if your own store runs on slate and linen.
The workflow rule: one high-resolution master per frame, then per-platform crops from it. Never the reverse.
Step 11: Retouch Honestly and Know When to Brief a Studio
There is a line in retouching a ring where you stop improving the photograph and start describing a different product, and it sits closer than most sellers think.
The retouch list, in order:
- Dust and fibres at macro, which is the single biggest time sink on any jewellery job.
- Removing the putty, stand or line from Step 8.
- Prong and edge cleanup after a focus stack.
- A believable contact shadow so the ring sits on the surface instead of floating above it.
- Metal colour corrected to what the grey card says, not to what looks nicer.
Cleaning the frame is fine. Changing the product is not. The argument is commercial rather than moral: when customers receive a piece that looks different from the online image, trust breaks and you pay in dissatisfaction and returns.
The DIY ceiling works the same way, as thresholds rather than opinions. In-house shooting holds up for a handful of SKUs, repeat listings on a locked setup, social content and resale frames. It stops paying when you are shooting a full collection to a deadline, when every piece needs a 20 to 50 frame stack, when the range mixes metals and stone types that each want different treatment, or when the images will be printed or used large.
